Rated R · 2005
That movie with all the ads that make it look like the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto . . . spends most of its 114 minutes on the making of a demo tape. People in a studio, rapping and recording. If you're going to watch that, wouldn't you prefer it to be Dr. Dre, or Lil Jon, or whoever, rather than actors pretending to be their kind? Yes, Ludacris and Isaac Hayes are in it, but not much. Pimping, as many songs have noted, ain't easy, and small-time pimp DJay (Terrence Howard) dreams bigger. When he happens to run into old acquaintance Key (Anthony Anderson), whom he learns is a sound engineer, the two decide to put together some tunes. And that's what they do for most of the movie, though a conflict arises in the last 15 minutes to give us a climax. The soundtrack is good though.
