Humpday Hayride

When: Wed., June 4, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: free
DJs Handsome Hawk and Tom LG grew up in homes where Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Bob Wills, and Buck Owens were played. Hawk, who was raised in Virginia, became a fan of punk in his late teens: His worlds collided when he discovered rockabilly, psychobilly, and hillbilly bands as a booker for 924 Gilman. Hawk and LG have a new weekly night of honky-tonk and classic and outlaw country music at The Night Light (311 Broadway, Oakland). Just don’t expect to hear popular country tunes. In an email, he wrote, “Kenny Chesney can kiss my ass. But when I started seeing local and touring bands like Red Meat, Hank III, The Horton Brothers, Deke Dickerson, Big Sandy and others, it got me to go back and rediscover George Jones, David Allen Coe and Waylon Jennings.” Both Hawk and LG have massive record collections, so their sets should be a treat.
