Circus Chimera's "Moon Dreams"

6/29-7/6

Circus Chimera bills itself as the World's Tallest Big Top Circus, but tallness is only one of its many attractions. The international troupe, which is coming to various locations around the East Bay through July 6, combines traditional circus acts, theater, storytelling, and hometown intimacy for a show that has been described as "Cirque du Soleil without the attitude." There are no nonhuman animals used in the acts. This year's show is "Sueños de Luna," or "Moon Dreams," and stars two ten-year-olds, Alina Sergeeva from Russia and Rodrigo Fernandez from Argentina. Rodrigo is the son of the Fernandez Duo, aerial artists who perform death-defying stunts 35 feet above the ground; his mother Sandra dangles from his father Luis' hand, and sometimes Luis holds a rope which Sandra clutches in her teeth while spinning. Other acts include the Chimal Family Troupe from the Yucatan -- which specializes in the nine-person Teeterboard culminating in a backward somersault to a human tower of five people -- and a Peruvian named Fridman, who balances atop a motley collection of rolling cylinders and boards. The circus rolls into Kennedy Community Park in Union City this weekend, and visits Pleasant Hill and San Ramon through July 6. 1-888-ONE-RING or www.circuschimera.com -- Sarah Cahill

Okay, If Vida Says So

It may be hard for young A's fans in the East Bay to work up much enthusiasm for the Little Giants Baseball Program , but there's no denying that the program, sponsored by the SF Giants Community Fund and presided over by commissioner (and former A's and Giants pitcher) Vida Blue, is actively engaged in providing sports training and self-esteem for some 9,000 kids 5-18. The Junior Giants, sponsors of more than fifty youth leagues, are looking for players and coaches. 1-877-JR-GIANT. -- Kelly Vance

Nakhodka Calling

Children's choirs sing out

To hear the three hundred young voices gathered together for this week's Golden Gate International Children's Choral Festival, you'd normally have to travel to Jakarta, Havana, Vladivostok, and Nakhodka. Leaving aside the problem of finding Nakhodka on a map, the sixth annual event, hosted by the Piedmont Choirs, is a rare showcase of choral music, with three concerts -- Wednesday in Oakland, Thursday in Alameda, and Saturday in Berkeley -- featuring the Indonesian Children's Choir, the Coro Infantil de Digna Guerra, and two choirs from Siberia, Raduga and Pictures at an Exhibition, in addition to the Piedmont and four other American choirs. Capt. Books

Books beget more books at B&N

Time was, if you had a bookish kid, you could just park him or her at the local library and be done with it. Not so these days -- even today's littlest bibliophiles are used to the bells and whistles of video games and the multiplex, and it takes more than dusty stacks to keep their attention. That's where Barnes & Noble's "Go on a Treasure Hunt with Books" program comes in. Sign up now at the Emeryville store (5604 Bay St.) and get a free book just for reading eight of them. And Saturday at 3 p.m., you can get into the mood with a Buried Treasure Party, with prizes hidden all over the store. To find said treasures, uncover the clues stashed, of course, in books. So strap a stuffed parrot to your shoulder, make a periscope out of a paper towel tube, and get to it. There's gold on them thar shelves! Call 510-547-0905 for further details. -- Stefanie Kalem
