Human Resources

When: Nov. 3-13 2009

The sculptures of Danielle Giudici Wallis imbue non-art materials with Magrittean logic and humor. In "Human Resources," flag-topped dirt/rubble mounds and oaken buckets filled variously with dirt, stones, bricks, and lead surround a central steel-banded brick smokestack perched atop a large, single caster: postminimalism meets Dada. In "Conversational Construct," the upholstered backs and seats of claw-footed chairs have hardened into brick and bark, and the umbrellas in "Portable Shelter Series" have likewise thickened from flimsy nylon into roofing shingles layered with insulation. In the model-home sample book, "No View" a floor and wall are opened perpendicularly like a book or laptop computer, revealing a brick insert set into the wall studs like an illustration nestled amid text columns, while heavy-duty bolts anchor the framing to the mudsill. (Two crate-based dioramas are on display nearby at 505 14th St.) Danielle Giudici Wallis runs through November 13 at Oakland Museum Sculpture Court (1111 Broadway, Oakland). MuseumCA.org
