Re: “What Ever Happened to the Rotary Nature Center?

Another example of the City of Oakland neglecting services for it's citizens even during a boom economy. This is just one example among many...in Parks & Rec alone.

My sympathies to the animals & employee(s). Ms. Benevidez...as a City employee she should have good medical insurance & other coverage. I hope she's Ok.

PS. If the City doesn't want to pay for upkeep, maybe the Packard Foundation would be willing to help...Especially given Jim Covel's connection to both the Nature Center & the Monterey Bay Aquarium?

Re: “Oakland Officials Call for Probes of Sewage Leaks

What a fiasco. Environmentally & politically. Ultimately this is a result of the City of Oakland not managing it's spending & general fund to prioritize services.

Re: “Broken Pipes, Broken System

Given this economy, its incredible that the City doesn't have the staff to repair the City Sewer system (much less letting it deteriorate to the point of getting sued by the EPA to begin with).

Though when one looks at the quality of the roads, underfunding Parks & Rec, the historic crime rate, lack of fire inspectors, etc. it seems quite in line with the City not giving it's citizens basic functioning services.

Where is all the money going??? Not services.

Re: “Oakland May Welcome Hoteliers Who Violated Labor Law

One of the interesting things said at this meeting was the Commissioners asking about when rules to include Community Input & Outreach would be added as requested in prior years. Staff said they didn't have enough staff to do it so it's been put on the back burner.

Aside from the issue itself, given this economy, its incredible that the City doesn't have the staff to implement &/or enforce their stated goals or ordinances.

Though when one looks at the quality of the roads, underfunding Parks & Rec, the sewer system, etc. it seems quite in line with the City not giving it's citizens the services they're supposed to.

Re: “Opinion: Getting the Shaft From Schaaf

Services and staff salaries & benefits come out of the same budget. We need to preserve enough money to improve services for Oakland citizens.

Re: “Oakland Schools Supe Proposes Reducing Cuts from $15 Million to $9 Million

Why isn't the BOE having Charters share in the costs?

Whether one supports Charters or not (or only supports successful Charters) it seems unfair to have only traditional schools be impacted.

This is going to cause more families to flee traditional OUSD schools, decreasing enrollment next year...and then the problem will become even worse.

Re: “Oakland Schools Grapple with Another Financial Crisis

Thanks to EB Express for their in depth coverage.

Here's a link to the No Cuts to Schools petition that is helping turn the tide against cutting funds to our schools & students, helping to create awareness & helping School Board members know the level of of opposition to these proposed school cuts:

Please get the word out by email & social media to your friends, neighbors & family.
