Hugh Masekela

When: June 23-24, 8 & 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $28

You might be partial to the 1970 version of "Grazing in the Grass," as performed by the vocal four-tet, The Friends of Distinction. But the original actually came out two years earlier, penned by South African trumpeter Hugh RamopoloMasekela. It was well received in the US, and sold about 4 million copies worldwide, according to jazz historian Scott Yanow. Masekela became widely known as a gateway drug to African jazz -- particularly for people who gravitate to catchy pop melodies, groovy percussion, and addictive hooks. But unlike Paul Simon, this guy is the genuine article. He'll perform at Yoshi's Oakland (510 Embarcadero, Oakland), on Thursday and Friday, June 23 and 24. 8 and 10 p.m., $28. Yoshis.com
