Howlin Rain

When: Fri., Sept. 6, 9 p.m. 2019
Oakland’s Ethan Miller and his band, Howlin Rain, drop into San Francisco to play some of the tunes from their latest self-released effort, Alligator Bride. The songs on the album have folky, meandering arrangements that lift them off and allow them to travel into a free form, blues-drenched landscape. Instrumentally and rhythmically, the approach is always over the top. Their blaring attack, driven by the distortion heavy lead guitar of Dan Cervantes, the thundering backbeat of Justin Smith’s drumming, and the relentless cadence produced by Jeff McElroy’s bass add to the power of Miller’s rigorous, rhythm guitar and over-the-top vocals, producing an irresistible, psychedelic wall of glorious noise. Miller says the band members think of themselves as the seedy underbelly of the jam band scene, but their striking musicianship puts them in a class of their own. The opening acts include GospelbeacH, Pacific Range and DJ The Hip Death Goddess & The Head.
