Howell Devine at Freight & Salvage

Simultaneously raw, rollicking, and technically precise, HowellDevine plays genre-bending blues that’s best experienced live. There’s long been a jazzy sensibility to the band’s style of Mississippi, Delta, and country blues. Joshua Howell plays guitar and harmonica; Joe Kyle Jr. takes on upright bass; and sometimes you’ll spot drummer Pete Devine blow the jug, play washboard, and keep the beat steady behind the drum kit all at the same time. Next week at Freight & Salvage, the Oakland trio will celebrate the release of its fourth record, HOWL, out on renowned keyboard player Jim Pugh’s new label, Little Village Foundation. With HOWL, the band continues its rootsy focus with covers such as “Going Down South” by R.L. Burnside. HowellDevine also surprisingly veers into funk territory with covers of “Sookie Sookie” by Steppenwolf and “Funky Miracle” by The Meters. Liquid light show artist George Holden and acoustic blues duo Pete Madsen and Celeste Kopel round out the bill.
