How to Win Conservative Friends and Influence Republican People

In Oakland Tribune reporter Josh Richman's recent profile of Lafayette resident Tom Del Beccaro, who sued to invalidate Jerry Brown's candidacy for attorney general and now seeks the vice chairmanship of the state Republican Party, there's a fun little sentence. "Long active in politics," Richman writes, "Del Beccaro has stepped it up in recent years: running unsuccessfully for Lafayette City Council in 1999; working on failed House candidate Claude Hutchison's campaign in 2000; chairing failed gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon's Contra Costa County campaign in 2002; winning his county's GOP chair in 2003; and chairing failed U.S. Senate candidate Bill Jones' Bay Area campaign in 2004."
