How to Train Your Demons at Classic Cars West Free Staff Pick

When: April 5, 6 p.m. 2019
Price: free
Local experimental video artist, Lanéya Billingsley (Known as Billie0cean on Instagram.) has a unique visual style, which she described as “honey-dipped, plastic-wrapped, and willing to be consumed” after her video for local artist, Saturn Risin9 got noticed by Paper Magazine last year. And indeed, the viscera and sheen on many of the figures in her Vimeo videos bring to mind honey, plastic, oil, and even melted butter. Rather than her models being covered in “goop,” her technique makes it seem as though the liquid is oozing from their pores, or that they’re made of a slowly melting, and constantly regenerating plastic. Depending upon context, this can be as terrifying an experience as an erotic one. Straddling between the erotic and fearsome appears to be the main drive from Billingsley’s How To Train Your Demons, where she challenges us to locate our demons, nurture our demons, and transform them for “the maintenance of self-love.”
