Crime drama, Thriller
With tons of style but a thimbleful of basic plot, this Australian “true-crime” shocker may be too nasty for its own good. In suburban Perth in the 1980s, a lower-middle-class married couple (played by Emma Booth and TV comedian Stephen Curry) tries to inject some excitement into their humdrum lives by kidnapping teenage girls, brutally using them as sex slaves, then murdering and burying them in the woods. But their latest victim (Ashleigh Cummings) proves different from the rest. It’s the theatrical feature film debut of TV-bred writer-director Ben Young, and it contains plot gaps but no overly graphic violence – just chilling misanthropy and an ice-cold mise-en-scene. Beware the dogs (108 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
