hot love-cold facts Free Staff Pick

When: Wednesdays-Sundays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Continues through Oct. 12 2019
In Borges’ fictional Library of Babel, a book was deemed incomplete unless it contained its own refutation. Cubist and Dada/Surrealist collage reassembled fragments of the world to create new realities. The nine artists of hot love-cold facts, curated by gallerist Jack Fischer, embrace recycling/repurposing and synthesis. Matt Gonzales and Ward Schumaker work abstractly, with, respectively, elegant, scavenged-paper collages that suggest Louise Nevelson sculptures, and small, enigmatic paintings of single words set against painterly backgrounds suggesting walls. Andrea Borsuk, Mildred Howard, and Katherine Sherwood combine figurative and abstract elements with Rauschenbergian relish to merge state-of-consciousness fantasy with social commentary. Catie O’Leary and Vanessa Woods collage antique engravings and monochrome photographs to create striking images that draw us in but elude narrative explanation. Victoria May’s abstract inner-tube assemblages (refering to Surrealism’s dictum that beauty must be convulsive, or nothing?) are weirdly anthropomorphic, while Frédéric Doazan’s video Supervenus deconstructs superficial cosmetic superventions.
