Rated PG-13 · 2008
In a small Alabama town in 1950, a down-on-his-luck black pianist and juke joint proprietor (Danny Glover, in commanding form) makes one last effort to stay in business by hiring a young musical drifter (Gary Clark Jr.) who plays one of them new-fangled electric guitars. Socially conscious filmmaker John Sayles returns to his Eight Men Out/Matewan roots with this comfortable combination of invigorating musical yarn and commentary on casual institutional racism in the Deep South, featuring fine performances by Lisa Gay Hamilton, Yaya DaCosta, Charles S. Dutton, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Stacy Keach as the corrupt sheriff, drooling for his fried-chicken sandwiches (123 min.).
