Holiday Caroling on Lake Merritt 

When: Thursdays, Fridays, 4-8 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays, 4-8 p.m. and Sat., Dec. 24, 3-5 p.m. Continues through Dec. 18 2011

Lake Merritt: home to a diverse species of birds, assortments of garbage and other detritus, exercisers of all sorts, and, for a few more days, motorized holiday party barges loaded with carolers and steered by Santa Claus. From 4-8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday,  Dec. 22-23, and 3-5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, boats are available for charter every half-hour at the Lake Merritt Boating Center (568 Bellevue Ave., Oakland) for hour-long trips along the lake's perimeter, replete with Christmas caroling, cookie eating, and hot cider sipping. $6 for individuals (6 p.m. tours only; groups given preference all other times), $75-$100 for fifteen-to-twenty-person charters. 510-238-2196 or OaklandNet.com/Parks/Programs/Boating.asp
