Director Randall Wright’s lively documentary profile of painter David Hockney functions as an open-ended diary of the artist’s sensibility, a living portrait of self-consciousness raised to a high art — with a cornucopia of home movies and spontaneous videos, plentiful full-access commentary by Hockney himself, and insights by such fine arts pundits and Hockney confidantes as Ed Ruscha and Henry Geldzahler. Best of all, Hockney expounds at length on his artistic vision, including the reason he painted so many SoCal swimming pools. Recommended (113 min.).
