What a find for fans of pantheon filmmakers Alfred Hitchcock and François Truffaut. Kent Jones’ documentary fleshes out Truffaut’s legendary 1966 booklength interview with Hitch, with a glorious cavalcade of clips and stills from both directors’ filmographies. It proves, once and for all, that the Master of Suspense was one of the greatest artists to ever shoot movies, with further testimony from an exciting lineup of film people such as Richard Linklater, David Fincher, Paul Schrader, Martin Scorsese, and Olivier Assayas. Best of all are Hitch’s candid views on the craft of instilling fear and anxiousness in his audience. Directed with a sense of humor by Jones (My Voyage to Italy; Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows) (79 min.).
