Drama, Musical, Romance
Taking a cue from Baz Luhrmann and also Grease, this lightweight but watchable musical confection has fun with a bunch of Moscow twentysomethings acting out against communist conformism and drabness by wearing loud clothes and dancing to decadent American jazz music, circa 1955. Best reasons to catch it are Anton Shagin as reluctant rebel Mels, and Michelle Williams lookalike Oksana Akinshina as his conflicted swinger girlfriend, Polly. Makes the Russian capital seem like a twinkling fairyland of young love. Valery Todorovsky directs and co-produces, from a standard-brand screenplay by Yuri Korotkov, adapted from his book Boogie Bones. (125 min)
