Dark comedy
Author J.G. Ballard’s dystopian fantasy watches Tom Hiddleston — as a new tenant in a monstrously huge condo tower — getting put through the wringer by his troublesome neighbors and the building’s technocrat owner (played by Jeremy Irons). The film’s director, veteran maker of eccentric shockers Ben Wheatley (Sightseers), plays the violent grotesqueries as if they were a drawing-room comedy of manners instead of a strained allegory on the breakdown of the social contract. It’s the sort of movie that wears you out. Screenplay adapted by writer Amy Jump. Energetically forbidding soundtrack score and jukebox tunes by Clint Mansell. Costarring Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, and a badly miscast Elisabeth Moss (119 min.).
