The creativity bug is inborn in some, while others get bitten only later in life: Grandma Moses, say hello to George W. Bush. The Oregon artist Robert Koch jumped into painting after retiring from teaching English, and is prolific, as if making up for lost time. Amazing Stories, a large show of his small paintings, expressionist but sans angst, is at the new Christian Ehrhorn Gallery. “In my paintings, I strive to convey ... the mystery and magic in everyday life ... of anonymous people,” he has said. “Some are perplexed, and some are disturbed, while others are proud and others are completely innocent of the chaos around them. To me, a successful painting is one that not only has a good composition, color and forms, but also has a story to tell.” Viewers may not know exactly what those stories are, but Koch’s painterly adventures may convert smitten viewers into amateur writers.
