Re: “Erykah Badu Gets a Second Chance in Oakland Tonight

Wow, that review was right on point for me. I was up in the balcony for the Sunday show, and was praying that the mix issues (I could see Black Thought spitting much game, but couldn't hear any of it) would be resolved by the time Erykah got on stage, but they were...only marginally.

If she'd switched up the set list a little (I LOVE "Orange Moon" but all the energy from "Danger" and a banging "Planet Rock" take of "Appletree" were lost in that ballad), engaged the audience more between songs instead of right at the end, she would have more successfully built that swirling vortex of energy she was going for. Also the endless intermission b/t the two sets didn't help.

Also, don't look online for all the great encore work she did in NYC and DC. You'll feel even more disappointed. No disrespect, I love both acts on the ticket, and will see them again, but that night wasn't as great as it could have been.
