Back in the late Sixties, broadcast news gathering underwent a sea change with the introduction of a portable video camera that enabled instant playback. The networks didn’t exactly understand it at first, but a small band of New York radical hippies certainly did, as co-directors Jon Nealon and Jenny Raskin show in this amiably informative documentary. Seen from a 21st-century vantage point, the Videofreex’ down-on-the-street footage looks pretty primitive, and the doc limits itself to the East Coast, but face-to-face interviews with such counterculture figures as Abbie Hoffman give it a feeling of better-late-than-never newsworthiness (79 min.).
