Why are we watching the misadventures of a sheepish outlaw (Keanu Reeves), his con man prison buddy (James Caan), and a temperamental stage actress (Vera Farmiga) getting involved in a doomed plan to tunnel from a theater into a bank vault in Buffalo, New York? Because director Malcolm Venville (he made the awful 44 Inch Chest) and three writers evidently thought it might be amusing to see Reeves, Caan, and Farmiga bounce off each other. It isn’t. The outlines of a viable comic character study are there, but Sacha Gervasi and David N. White’s screenplay (from a story by Gervasi and Stephen Hamel) leeches all the fun out of it, and the principals — aside from Caan, who generates his own power — seem lost and abandoned. Also in the tired cast: Bill Duke, Fisher Stevens, Peter Stormare (as the bombastic director of a production of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard), and Danny Hoch. (108 min.)
