Helmet and Saint Vitus

When: Sun., April 3, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $25, $30
One is a Nineties post-hardcore outfit from New York; the other is a stoner-doom metal band from Los Angeles that came up in the late-Seventies. On the surface, Helmet and Saint Vitus might seem like an odd couple for a co-headlining tour, but both never made it past cult status despite critical praise and no shortage of devotees. It's safe to say that fans of both bands also appreciate chunky, mid-tempo riffs with varying degrees of distortion. But perhaps their commonalities are best exemplified in their followers: Many of today's metal and hard-rock bands share the aggressive, tightly wound, urban-decaying quality of Helmet and the loosely psychedelic, bluesy twinges of forebears like Saint Vitus. Nonetheless, nothing about this Metalliance Tour is routine - from the rest of the lineup (Crowbar, Kylesa, Red Fang, Howl, and The Atlas Moth) to the venue (the very non-metal Mezzanine, 444 Jessie St., San Francisco). It should be epic. On Sunday, April 3. 9 p.m., $25, $30.
