Despite being an inventive, genre-bending super-hero movie with a lot of heart, 2004's Hellboy wasn’t exactly a hit at the box office. So it comes as a surprise that a sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was even made. It’s an even bigger shock that writer-director Guillermo del Toro would deliver a sequel that falls so short of the original in terms of drama and story. Del Toro’s fascination with Catholic imagery and fantasy still comes through loud and clear, but Hellboy (Ron Perlman) just seems bored this time around. For every good one-liner, there are three opportunities missed. That said, Hellboy II is still better than 98% of what else you’ll find out there this summer. Just don’t judge it against the last go-round (110 min.).
