Comedy drama
Affable British funnyman Simon Pegg (The End of the World, Shaun of the Dead) steps into the shoes of Hugh Grant with this aggressively harmless comic feel-gooder. Pegg’s title character, a discombobulated London psychiatrist with a bored girlfriend (the underutilized Rosamund Pike), discovers the true meaning of befuddlement – oh yeah, also happiness – on a round-the-world tour of places where an Englishman with a silly hat might conceivably be taken advantage of: Shanghai, Tibet, Africa, and Los Angeles. It’s the Comfy Chair of date movies, a middle-aged man’s version of Eat Pray Love, but somehow, some way, Pegg’s nice-guy persona and his lived-in face overcome the pain of the clichés in director Peter Chelsom’s light-as-dandelion-fuzz screenplay (which he wrote with Maria von Heland and Tinker Lindsay, adapted from François Lelord’s novel). Call it movie magic. Costarring Stellan Skarsgård, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, and Ming Zhao (114 min.).
Director: Peter Chelsom
Cast: Simon Pegg, Toni Collette, Rosamund Pike, Stellan Skarsgard, Jean Reno, Christopher Plummer, Chad Willett, Veronica Ferres and Jakob Davies
