Hearts & Minds Film Festival

When: Sun., Oct. 26, 12-5 p.m. 2008
Price: $9 for each screening, $10 for the reception, $20 for an all-day pass

It is, indeed, the month for film festivals, and between Oakland International Film Festival at Grand Lake Theater and the 12th Annual Arab Film Festival, we've seen the work of many inexhaustibly creative -- but largely unheralded -- directors pass through the Bay Area. If you're interested in topical material with a strong local connection, check out the Hearts and Minds Film Festival, which screens Oct. 25 at Delancy St. Foundation in San Francisco, and Oct. 26 at Laney College Theater (900 Fallon St., Oakland). Comprising two sections -- one on food and sustainability, the other on civil rights -- Hearts and Minds features Nina Perez's teen revenge film String Bean Loser, Philip Hamer'sGlue Boys, about glue sniffers in Kitale, Kenya, and The Apollosby Jazmin Jones and Nick Parker, about how the 1981 senior class at Oakland Tech helped turn Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a national holiday. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (Sat.), noon-5 p.m. (Sun.), $9-$20.
