Adventure, Fantasy
Cliffhanger seventh episode in the franchise deploys “decoy Harrys” to thwart, temporarily, the evil-nosed Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his cabal of fiends, then simmers down into the ongoing ménage-à-trois among Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson), and odd man out Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). Despite an undercover visit to the Ministry of Magic and the usual load o’ effects, the middle sags a bit. Best sequence: the “Three Brothers” legend shadow play. Take away the comfy-gothic sorcery stuff and you’ve got an ordinary big-budget thriller like any other – but then wands ‘n’ warlocks are more or less the point, aren’t they? Bobbing for apples in the humongous cast are Rhys Ifans, Fiona Shaw, Imelda Staunton, and Andy Linden, among dozens more. The Potter series’ spell is definitely wearing off. Caretaker direction by David Yates, from Steve Kloves’ adaptation of the J.K. Rowling young-adult novel. (146 min.)
