and it's basically enough to make you kiss Warren Hellman on the mouth. Every year, Hardly Strictly — the music festival put on totally free by the local venture capitalist — seems to continue to improve and diversify its lineup, and this year's looking particularly strong. Without further ado, we've got: M. Ward, Woods, Bright Eyes, Thurston Moore, Emmylou Harris, Gomez, Robert Plant and the Band of Joy, Broken Social Scene, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard, and The Blind Boys of Alabama, plus eighty — yes, EIGHTY — other acts (see the full lineup and schedule here).

The festival will, as usual, go down in Golden Gate Park, and this year's dates are September 30-October 2. Get excited.

History-laden thrillers, intellectual capers, a romantic heroine with a Ph.D, a murder mystery penned by a MacArthur Genius: This summer’s best books — many of which have local authors and settings — are equal parts brainy and beachy.
