Mike Leigh, the unwaveringly humane writer-director of Topsy-Turvy, All or Nothing, and other slices of English life, gives us Poppy (perfectly embodied by frequent Leigh player Sally Hawkins), an unstoppably upbeat London primary school teacher. No matter who tries to deflate her relentless cheerfulness — even a misanthropic driving instructor played by Eddie Marsan (Vera Drake) — Poppy perseveres. She's an innocent and you want to protect her from everything, but really she's much stronger than you are, and this one of the finest character studies in Leigh's brilliant career. Also with Alexis Zegerman and Samuel Roukin (118 min.).
