Hanukkah Festival of Light

When: Sun., Dec. 11, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. 2011
Price: $5 donation plus canned food donation

Latkes -- salty, starchy, and gloriously oily potato pancakes -- are traditionally served at Hannukah to remind celebrants of the tiny portion of olive oil that, according to the Talmud, miraculously burned for eight days after the Temple was destroyed. Load up on freshly fried latkes piled high with applesauce on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Jewish Community Center of the EastBay (1414 Walnut St., Berkeley), whose family-friendly Hannukah party also includes storytelling and a concert featuring the IsaacZones band. 10 a.m., $5 plus canned-food donation.510-410-0622 orJewishGateways.org
