Re: “Party 2 Nite. R U Going?

I'm sorry I don't have a lot of time. My kid suggested I look at a dialogue that was going online here. I read a few of the comments. Just my 2 cents: Free 2b has a point that most kids are good and that much youth misbheavior will pass. Kristen has a point that the thug culture we close our eyes to in the schools will come back to haunt us as violence in the streets. Michael has a point that as a student there are things you can do to take care of yourself and avoid conflicts. The East Bay Express has a point when it removes comments containing threats, reader attacks and insults that go "beyond beyond." Free 2b posted some rules for student ettiquette. Might add these 3: Just because students are black and dressed in baggy pants doesn't make them bad. Just because people are teenagers in high school doesn't mean they aren't criminals or that their bullying might not require adult intervention. Just because things are happening in one way today, doesn't mean everything will stay the same tomorrow. Nothing's set in stone. History shows that things never stop changing.
I want to share an anecdote. I was driving down an East Oakland street yesterday on business. In the middle of the street I found a book. The book was Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. Norton Critical Edition. I was struck by the juxtaposition of that particular novel on a street in this particular part of town, and thought others might enjoy the story.
