Yes, Christopher Guest’s Waiting for Guffman is a smarter, more entertaining satire of the small-town playhouse than director Andrew Fleming’s Hamlet 2. Hamlet 2 just has a lot more fun doing it. Steve Coogan is Dana Marschz, a failed actor turned volunteer high school drama teacher. Faced with the impending shutdown of his beloved department for budgetary reasons, he decides to mount the school’s most ambitious musical yet — his original script, Hamlet 2. In it, Hamlet and Jesus Christ time-travel Bill-and-Ted-style as they work out their daddy issues with the help of catchy showtunes like “Rock Me, Sexy Jesus.” Needless to say, the powers that be and general community are appalled by Marschz’s vision and try to shut him down. Comedy ensues (92 min.).
