One can get a sense of the brooding folk-rock on Halcyonaire’s 2010 debut album from its title, Dread Hymn, and from its cover art, a photo of a parched desert landscape. But besides the spiritual turpitude contained in the Oakland quartet’s lyrics and delivery, its ominous acoustic-guitar-picking, its rattling percussion, and its weepy strings, the band could also wallop and rage when called for. Halcyonaire drifted into relative inactivity after Dread Hymn was released, but has now resurfaced with a new single, “Young Penitents.” The A-side boasts vibrant organ and a lean and punchy sound, while the epic B-side, “The Healer,” unfurls with windswept, atmospheric tension for nearly seven minutes. The release doesn’t suggest a reawakening; Halcyonaire is, thankfully, still searching and disquieted by life. See the band at the Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St., San Francisco), with Kitten Grenade and Sad Bastard Book Club, on Thursday.
