Adam Shankman's movie version of the Broadway hit -- itself based on John Waters' 1988 film -- satirizes prejudices about race, class, and physical appearance in 1962 Baltimore. Plump, peppy teenager Tracy Turnblad crusades to integrate a local TV dance show and helps restore romance to the marriage of her overweight mom and eccentric dad. With its wisecracking screenplay, period-perfect pop score, and splashy choreography, this may be the funniest, dancing-est screen musical since Singin' in the Rain. The inspired cast includes lovable newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracy, John Travolta (in drag) and Christopher Walken as her parents, Michelle Pfeiffer as her snobbish nemesis, Allison Janney as a religious fanatic, and Waters himself as a flasher (natch).
