Habib Koité and Bamada

When: Thu., Nov. 2, 7 p.m. 2017
Price: $30-$34

Habib Koité and Bamada at Freight & Salvage

Habib Koité was born in Mali and comes from a long line of griots — musicians who are songwriters, storytellers, and oral historians. He developed the unique sound he gets from his guitar by using an open tuning to duplicate the sound he heard his mother producing on her kamele n’goni, a harp/oud hybrid with a timbre that blends the tones of classical harp, banjo, and kalimba. His music incorporates sounds from all over Mali, West Africa, Latin America, Jamaica, and the Southern US, in particular the blues, gospel, and jazz. His backing band, Bamada, includes some of best Mali’s best musicians, players adept at the deep folkloric roots of their native country as well as the rock ’n’ roll and other global rhythms Koité adds to his inventive arrangements. His mellow baritone caresses you like a tropical breeze, seamlessly flowing between English, French, and various languages from his homeland, complemented by his amazing fingerpicking.
