Re: “In Search of the Raiders Mystique

I haven't LIKED Al Davis since he moved my team (Al's just the general managing partner, I'm a Raider fan, he works for me) to LA when I was a teenager growing up in the EastBay. But he came off my Marked for Death list when the Raiders moved back. That said, I have always RESPECTED Davis' accomplishments and contributions to the NFL,to football, and yes, to society. Not just in the distant past (forced the merger) but in the very recent past (got the CBA signed). It is my hope that in the present, Davis stands up to the agents and becomes the catalyst for an NBA style rookie contract structure that will end the wild escalation of rookie contracts the League has seen since 2004. I don't think anyone else in the League has the backbone to get it done. As far as critics go, if they can't dignify their comments by acknowleging the respect Al Davis has earned, then they can go pound sand, they only hurt their own credibility. Is Al Davis infallible? Hell no, but he's forgotten more about football and the business of the NFL and than anyone else in the League has ever known.
