Drama, War
It’s Matt Damon against the world in Paul Greengrass’ frantic clusterfuck of an Iraq war movie. As a US Army warrant officer on a wild goose chase for “weapons of mass destruction” during the war’s first days in 2003, Roy Miller (Damon) ends up fighting not only local insurgents but black-op US forces under the command of Pentagon bad guy Greg Kinnear. The screenplay (by Brian Helgeland from the book by Rajiv Chandrasekaran) may beg us to connect the political dots, but the framework looks like a TV cop show – and not a very good one at that. Sharp combat scenes, but so what? Costarring Brendan Gleeson as a sympathetic (huh?) CIA man; Khalid Abdalla as Miller’s comic-relief translator, Freddy; and a safe full of shrink-wrapped bricks of hundred-dollar bills. Greengrass and Damon clicked in their two Bourne adventures, but this one is shooting blanks (115 min.).
