Comedy
Being a friend of Adam Sandler really pays off. Regular Sandler co-stars Allen Covert and Peter Dante now have a movie of their very own, about a pot-smoking videogame tester (Covert, who also co-wrote) forced by circumstance to move in with his grandmother (Doris Roberts) and her two elderly roommates. Meanwhile, he's trying to finish work on a brand-new game, under the watchful eyes of geek-friendly babe Samantha (Linda Cardellini) and Matrix-obsessed ubernerd/programmer extraordinaire J.P. (Joel David Moore). Director Nicholaus Goossen is Covert's former assistant, so one can guess who really called the shots. While Covert nails the details of gamer-geek life with uncanny accuracy, he fails to make many of the jokes fly -- the man just isn't lead material. Cardellini does what she can, but Moore is heinously miscast in a role that could have been gut-bustingly funny had it been handled by an actor with actual comic timing.
