Grand Reopening Celebration

When: Sat., April 5, 12-4 p.m. 2008
Price: free

You've heard of silver mines and salt mines. But sand, a key component of glass, was once a subterranean commodity too. Nearly 200,000 tons were extracted from the Hazel-Atlas silica mine in its pre-World War II heyday. After major renovations, its April 5 grand-reopening celebration at the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve (5175 Somersville Rd., Antioch) includes strolls along 810 feet of the mine; previously, only 400 feet were accessible. Noon-4 p.m. EBParks.org
