Drama
The Clint Eastwood version of About Schmidt features a Grumpy Old Man with Guns, widowed former Detroit auto worker and combative Korea vet Walt Kowalski (Eastwood), reluctantly befriending the Hmong family next door and protecting them from a street gang while learning tough-love lessons about himself — and also kicking ass. Meaning we get heart tugs and haymakers in equal measure, and director Eastwood can have his cake and eat it, too. The groan-producing screenplay is by Nick Schenk and Dave Johannson. Solid, naturalistic performances by Bee Vang and Ahney Her as the Hmong siblings, Thao (Walt calls him Toad) and Sue (116 min.).
