Gordo Fest

When: Thu., March 6, 5 p.m. 2008
Price: free

Drawing -- literally -- on his Mexican-born father's heritage, cartoonist Gus Arriola created Gordo, the bean farmer-turned-tour guide who was the titular hero of a strip that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle for 43 years and was syndicated in hundreds of other papers. Arriola, who animated Krazy Kat early in his career, died Feb. 2 at age ninety. He bequeathed his archives to UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library, and on Thursday, March 6 the library is hosting Gordo Fest, a reception and celebration of the beloved cartoonist and his creations. 5 p.m. Bancroft.berkeley.edu
