Good Night, and Good Luck

When: June 29-Aug. 24 2013
Important Projects’ current exhibitions — one of work by local artist Matthew Endler and one of work by Chicago-based sibling duo André and Evan Lenox — are alike in their Dadaist sensibilities and seeming impenetrability. The objects are rough-hewn and strange. The Lenoxes present a headless black cat sculpture, a conch shell somehow molded into a jagged star-shaped item, and a piece consisting of layered glass panes, fabric cut-outs, and fluorescent light tubes. Endler takes found objects of mysterious utility (car parts? gardening implements?) and uses them as bases for little wall-mounted sculptures, which he enlivens with a distinctive brand of poetic babble: One piece reads “gladgod sips sipping”; another presents a strangely compelling formula, if it can be called that, for combining the linguistic elements “the” and “is” into the opaque yet suggestive compound “theis”). If you’re suitably amenable to this brand of vaguely devious aesthetic play, the works will open right up to you.
