Comedy, Documentary
Is Chris Rock the new Michael Moore? In the spirit of Moore’s rambling documentaries, comedian Rock — with help from director Jeff Stilson and three other writers — ventures from the beauty salons of South Central Los Angeles to Chennai, India, to investigate the world of African-American hair and the $9 billion industry devoted to controlling it. With Rock wisecracking from the sidelines, we learn all about cream relaxer, hair weaves, the path of human hair extensions from Hindu temples to the US, and the uproarious Bronner Brothers Hair Show in Atlanta. Plenty of laughs, but Rock never lets up on one point: Why do black people spend so much money and time trying to look white? One of the best documentaries of 2009 (95 min.).
