Rated R · 118 minutes · 2008

The middle third drags a little in sorting out the 1972 presidential election. Even so, filmmaker Alex Gibney’s frank but admiring documentary profile of the late Gonzo journalist provides an entertaining trip back to the “Fear and Loathing” days, when Rolling Stone reporter Thompson set the standard for late copy and getting stoned on deadline. Gibney, one of America’s best documentarians (Taxi to the Dark Side, Who Killed the Electric Car?), stuffs Thompson’s wild saga with a blue-chip array of talking-head admirers, including George McGovern, Tom Wolfe, Jimmy Carter, Sonny Barger of the Hell’s Angels, and illustrator Ralph Steadman, whose ink-splattered drawings helped fuel the Gonzo craze. Written, co-produced, and directed by Gibney (118 min.).
