Crime drama, Mystery, Thriller
Director David Fincher, screenwriter/novelist Gillian Flynn, and actors Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck join forces for a thoroughly satisfying – that is, completely crazy and miserable – neo-noir about a dissatisfied NYC transplant housewife (Pike), her seemingly oblivious hubby (Affleck), and the day she went missing from their home in the middle of Missouri. Everything filmmaker Fincher likes is here in abundance – a complicated, multi-strand plot line; richness of character detail with plenty of supporting players; and the tendency to quietly observe people who use other people. Among the standout cast: Neil Patrick Harris (unhinged ex-boyfriend), Kim Dickens (hard-pressing police detective), Lola Kirke (white trash neighbor), Emily Ratajkowski (jailbait student), Tyler Perry (attorney), and Sela Ward and Missi Pyle as cable TV talk show hosts. More down to earth, and therefore more personally frightening, than anything in Fincher’s oeuvre since Zodiac (149 min.).
