Shot on location in the outback of Myanmar (Burma) using non-actors, filmmaker Brian Perkins’ pint-sized village picture achieves maximum local color with its chronicle of four young Buddhist novice monks left alone in their monastery when the abbot goes away on business. Night-time apparitions, wild animals, and potential forest spirits haunt them, but far scarier are the shadowy soldiers prowling the jungle with their assault rifles. American international writer-director Perkins’ debut feature is a first-class travelogue with a definite streak of social commentary, and would make a nifty double feature with any of the new wave of Southeast Asian “jungle pics” (104 min.).
