I don’t describe many metal shows as “transcendent” — a clichéd term, anyway. But really, that was the only descriptor that came to mind when Gojira last came through town nearly three years ago. At the apex of the French metal band’s performance of “Flying Whales,” a song off its album From Mars to Sirius, three of the four members engaged in a synchronized choreographed move that embodied said flying whales. As cheesy as it sounds, it was sort of mind-blowing. But that’s just the level of earnest intensity you can expect from Gojira, a band that’s known for championing the importance of things like taking care of Mother Earth. Another act would make that notion laughable, except that Gojira is one of the metal scene’s most forward-thinking bands, combining technical prowess (double-bass flurries; wailing speed-picking) with rhythmic groove and an epic sense of purpose. If you see any metal show this year, this should be the one. At The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) on Wednesday, Jan. 23, with Devin Townsend and The Atlas Moth. 8 p.m., $20.
