Dark comedy, Drama
Life is tough in the title neighborhood, what with the cartage thieves, shylocks, and double-crossers. Another East Coast working-stiff crime derby like many others, only with an expensive cast – the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Christina Hendricks, Richard Jenkins – and dialogue adapted from Peter Dexter’s novel, both of which are problematic. Overacting runs riot. The beer-commercial scenes in the local bar are mawkish as hell, and then the bodies start to fall. This is the big-screen directorial debut for John Slattery, which may explain the presence of his Mad Men pal Hendricks but cannot excuse the rest. What a dreary sendoff for Hoffman. Alex Metcalf helped Slattery adapt the screenplay (88 min.).
