Goblin at The UC Theatre

t’s impossible to separate Netflix smash hit Stranger Things from its soundtrack, scored by two members of Austin retro synthwave quartet S U R V I V E. It’s become as iconic to the show as the “Upside Down” or Eleven’s Ego waffles. In the same way, much of cult legend director Dario Argento’s 1970s work is uniquely tied to the music of Italian prog-rock band Goblin. The group’s songs created nail-biting tension and just the right creepy atmosphere for Argento’s offbeat horror movies. Some of Goblin’s most iconic songs are the title credit sequences for Suspiria (1977) and Profondo Rosso (1975). The music is instrumental prog-rock, but rarely goes over the top the way much of the genre did in the ’70s (e.g., Emerson, Lake and Palmer). In fact, many folks getting into this current retro synthwave revival might appreciate the dark, foreboding elements of the music.
