globalFEST: The New Golden Age of Latin Music

When: Fri., March 9, 8 p.m. 2018
Price: $28-$60
Since the success of the 2017 song “Despacito” by Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi, interest in Latin music has surged. While mainstream artists are getting lots of attention, there are lesser-known yet equally talented acts worth your time. Two bands that should be on your radar: East Los Angeles’ Las Cafeteras, an alt-folk band composed of children of immigrants who mix the traditional sounds of jarocho (music from the state of Veracruz) with the hip-hop and rock that they grew up with in Los Angeles, and add socially conscious lyrics. Flor De Toloache is an all-female mariachi band from New York whose members hail from places as diverse as Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy, and the United States. The Grammy-nominated group pays homage to traditional mariachi music while also incorporating R&B sounds. Both bands will be playing globalFEST, so if you like Latin music or are just curious about the mix of sounds from Latin America and the United States, you’ll definitely want to check it out. Cal Performances is behind it, so you know it will be a stellar production.
